Fun ways to Fight the Flab
Burning off those excess calories needn't be hard work. Find a fun way to exercise and watch the pounds fall off.
To really make the difference in your diet and see results fast you need to combine a sensible diet with regular exercise.
Here's our advice on choosing a fitness programme and getting the most from it.
1. Are you a solo swimmer or a team player?
Understanding your preference for exercising alone or with others plays a large part in maintaining your motivation for regular exercise.
If you're happy to go on solitary runs, swims, cycle rides etc. that's great. It means you've got the motivation to give yourself a kickstart in your exercise regime and maintain a level of commitment to it. You'll also enjoy the flexibility of being able to exercise as and when you can fit it in around your schedule rather than having to wait for others, which can play havoc with keeping a regular exercise regime and lead to loss of motivation.
On the other hand, exercising with others is fun and can help in keeping motivation levels maintained with the additional benefit of developing a good social circle around fitness. So if you think you're someone who might need a bit of gentle persuasion to exercise regularly perhaps joining the local football or netball team could be the thing for you.
Aside from traditional team sports such as football, netball or rugby you should also contact your local sports centre to see if they organise regular group activities. Most local centres arrange weekly running groups, walking groups etc. This is particularly helpful if you aren't too keen on starting off on your own but would like to build your confidence in the activity before taking off by yourself.
2. Wear the right clothing for the sport
Depending on the sport you wear you'll find you need different footwear, underwear and clothing. This is essential to make sure your body is properly supported so as not to cause injury and strains.
3. Keep a fitness diary
4. Set yourself a fitness goal
Many people find having a goal to work towards is a great incentive in maintaining a fitness regime. Training for large events as marathons or charity runs provides a clear purpose with a huge sense of achievement once you've reached it.
Others targets could be focused around special events in your life. Getting in shape for a wedding, toning up to look buff in your bikini or feeling fab after having a baby.
5. Try new things
Don't just stick to one form of exercise. This can quickly lead to boredom. Book yourself into a new aerobic class at your local gym, or try taking up a new sport with friends.
